Press release,

ICSPR: The Israeli occupation bears responsibility for the lives of detainees and prisoners on hunger strike

The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights “ICSPR” follows with great concern and condemnation the deterioration of the health conditions of dozens of Palestinian prisoners and detainees on hunger strike in Israeli jails, in protest against the policy of administrative detention against them, in addition to deliberately subjecting Palestinian prisoners to policies and procedures violate their most basic legal and human rights, which are incompatible with the minimum principles and values of international humanitarian law, notably the 1949 Geneva Conventions.

According to data available to the International Commission, in recent days, there has been a steady increase in the number of Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike, rejecting the policy of arbitrary administrative detention, demanding their legitimate rights, especially after the deterioration of the health conditions of a number of prisoners on hunger strike for varying periods of time.

The International Committee expresses its deep concern over the life of the hunger strikers, and holds the occupation fully responsible for their life and safety, and reaffirming that the Israeli occupation authorities intentionally pursue coercive policies against Palestinian prisoners and detainees, with the aim of undermining their dignity. ICSPR hereby declaring its solidarity and support for the just and legitimate demands of the prisoners and detainees until their freedom, and demands the following:

  1. ICSPR holds the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the life of the Palestinian prisoners and detainees on hunger strike in its prisons.
  2. ICSPR calls upon the international community to intervene to compel the occupation state to abide by international human rights standards, in particular the conventions and covenants on the rights of prisoners and persons deprived of their liberty, such as the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners of 1955 and the Body of Principles for the Protection of All Persons under Any Form of Detention or Imprisonment of 1988.
  3. ICSPR calls on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene urgently to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation of detainees on hunger strike.
  4. ICSPR calls upon the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to open an immediate investigation into the serious Israeli violations against Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Israeli jails, including the hunger strikers.
