Press Release,

In the wake of the martyrdom of detainee “Bassam Sayeh” in the occupation prisons.

ICSPR urges the competent international community organizations to open a serious investigation into the circumstances of the Israeli crime against the Sayeh

The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights “ICSPR” followed with deep concern and condemnation the death of Bassam Al-Sayeh (47 yr), from Nablus in the West Bank, after he was transferred to Assaf Harofeh Hospital due to cruel torture and deliberate medical negligence, especially that the martyr “Sayeh”, was considered one of the most serious medical conditions in prisons, after suffering from leukemia and bone cancer, and enlargement in the liver, and a growing weakness in the heart muscle, which reached the capacity of 25%.

It is worth mentioning that Bassam al-Sayeh was arrested on 8 October 2015 and sentenced to life imprisonment twice, in addition to another 30 years.

The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights “ICSPR” holds the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the killing of Sayeh, and stressing that the continuation of the policy of torture and medical negligence against prisoners and detainees poses a real threat to their lives in prisons.  ICSPR also considers the silence of the international community and its organizations about the crimes of the occupation against Palestinian prisoners, encourages the occupation and gives it a green light to commit more violations, and emphasizes the medical negligence and torture policies adopted by the Israeli authorities against Palestinian prisoners and detainees constitute a violation of the minimum basic principles of treatment of prisoners adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1979 and 1990, which emphasized the protection of prisoners’ health and medical care, and with the death of “Sayeh” prisoner, the number of prisoners who died in Israeli jails has risen to approximately 221 since 1967, as an inherent consequence of arbitrary occupation policies. Therefore, ICSPR demands the following:

  • ICSPR holds the Israeli authorities fully responsible for the death of the prisoner Bassam al-Sayeh, due to the continued policy of torture and medical negligence against Palestinian prisoners.
  • ICSPR calls upon the international community to work hard to establish an urgent and impartial international commission of inquiry to uncover the circumstances of the death and announce the results, and to hold the perpetrators accountable, including forcing the Israeli authorities to fulfil their legal responsibilities towards Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
  • ICSPR calls upon the Palestinian leadership to refer the file of Israeli violations against prisoners and detainees to the International Criminal Court, and urges it to open an immediate investigation into the serious violations against Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Israeli prisons.
