ICSPR Concludes Training Course on Promoting Civil Peace, Transitional Justice, and Building Civil Society Capacity

Gaza, Palestine – The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights (ICSPR), in cooperation with the Swiss Representative Office in Jerusalem, has concluded a specialized training course aimed at strengthening the capacities of its team in governance, civil peacebuilding, transitional justice, and community participation. The course brought together Palestinian and Arab experts and academics.

The five-day course comprised 25 training hours and involved team members from the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Egypt through video conferencing. It addressed the challenges facing Palestinians and approaches to rebuilding the Palestinian political system, democratic transition, reconciliation and transitional justice, rebuilding the justice system, dialogue facilitation, digital advocacy, governance, and the role of youth and women in conflict resolution and promoting civil peace. The course also examined international experiences, including South Africa’s experience in reconciliation and transitional justice.

The course was held as part of the Civil Peacebuilding and Transitional Justice Programme, in partnership with the Swiss Representative Office in Jerusalem. The programme aims to strengthen the capacities of youth, women, and civil society activists to contribute to protecting human rights, promoting civil peace and the rule of law, and preparing for the challenges of the transitional phase. It also seeks to encourage participation in developing a vision for rebuilding the justice system and support efforts to rebuild Palestinian institutions.

The training was delivered by a team of experts and training consultants, including Dr. Salah Abd Alati, Dr. Samer Mousa, Dr. Ahmad Al-Awaity, Dr. Rehab Al-Jabali, Dr. Mostafa Mohamed, and Sultan Nasser. Their contributions provided participants with opportunities to exchange expertise and discuss practical challenges associated with the upcoming phase.

At the conclusion of the course, Ms. Amani Al-Arouri, Programme Coordinator at the Swiss Representative Office in Jerusalem, participated in the closing session. In her remarks, she highlighted the importance of cooperation and partnership with ICSPR in capacity-building, civil peacebuilding, and transitional justice. She commended the Commission’s efforts to serve Palestinian society and empower youth, women, and civil society to fulfil their roles in strengthening resilience and protecting civil peace.

For his part, Dr. Salah Abd Alati, Chairperson of ICSPR, expressed his appreciation for the cooperation with the Swiss Representative Office and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, emphasizing the support this partnership provides for efforts to protect civil peace, strengthen governance frameworks, safeguard human rights, and advance justice in Palestine. He stressed the importance of investing in civil society capacity-building, preparing for the requirements of the coming phase, and working with a range of national and international stakeholders.

Dr. Abd Alati also praised the efforts of the Swiss Representative Office and extended his gratitude to the experts, trainers, and all course participants. He emphasized the importance of translating the course outcomes into practical initiatives and actions that strengthen civil society’s capacity to address the challenges of the transitional phase, protect rights, support reconciliation and justice, promote civil peace, and uphold the rule of law.
