(ICSPR) warns of the seriousness of the crime of tapping citizens’ calls.

Gaza Strip/ The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights ICSPR condemns and denounces in the strongest possible terms tapping the security services in the West Bank the citizens telephone calls of a number of officials, lawyers and famous personalities. A few days ago, reports were published on social media network sites stating that the security services eavesdrop on the calls. This was followed by the announcement of the intention of some officials and rights organizations to lodge complaints to the competent authorities to demand an investigation into this violation.

ICSPR considers that wiretapping constitutes a serious assault on the right to privacy guaranteed in the Basic Law and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and constitutes a crime in the Palestinian law which requires criminal prosecution and compensation for those affected, as well as

(ICSPR) warns of the seriousness of the crime of eavesdrop citizens calls and its serious repercussions on the right to privacy as a fundamental human right

ICSPR records and demands the following:

ICSPR emphasizes on the importance and obligation to respect the protection afforded by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to the right to privacy, as well as the obligation of the authorities to comply with the safeguards guaranteed by the Code of Criminal Procedure with regard to the control of telephone calls.

ICSPR demands the official authorities of opening a comprehensive investigation on this crime and to prosecute those involved and bring them to justice and take action to ensure non-recurrence.

ICSPR calls upon all those affected to lodge complaints to the competent authorities in order to urge them to expedite the investigation of this crime.

ICSPR carries the communications companies working in the Palestinian territories part of the responsibility demanding them to declare a clear position on this crime and protect their subscribers.
