ICSPR : The current health risks in the Gaza Strip require new government measures that contribute to reducing the spread of Coronavirus

The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights “ICSPR”  follows with great concern the current humanitarian and health situation in the wake of announcing the high record of daily infections, especially with the modest capabilities of the health sector to respond to current developments.

During the past three days, there has been an increase of 45% of the total number of citizens subjected to examination, which indicates that we are facing a new peak phase, accompanied by seriously deteriorating humanitarian conditions as a result of the Israeli occupation forces’ insistence on tightening siege measures and collective punishment against civilians in the Gaza Strip.

ICSPR warns of the consequences of a close humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip due to successive increases in both infection and deaths, and considers that the current circumstances require reconsidering the package of measures applied in order to ensure the application of new measures that take into account the deteriorating economic and social conditions of the citizens and the importance of maintaining public health and safety. Therefore:

  • ICSPR demands the Ministry of Health and the Crisis Cell in the Gaza Strip to conduct an objective evaluation of the applied measures and to consider new ones to reduce the spread.
  • ICSPR calls on the international community to immediately and effectively intervene in order to pressure the Israeli occupation to lift the siege on the Gaza Strip and provide the health sector with all laboratory and medical tools necessary to conduct the tests.
  • ICPSR calls on the Palestinian diplomacy to intensify its efforts in order to hold the Israeli occupation responsible for abandoning its legal obligations towards Palestinian civilians.
