ICSPR Condemns Horrific Massacre Targeting a Funeral in Nuseirat Camp and Warns of Continued Bloody Escalation
The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights (ICSPR) strongly condemns the horrific massacre committed by Israeli occupation forces, which targeted the funeral procession of martyr Taher Abdel Wahid with a drone outside Sheikh Ahmed Yassin Mosque in Nuseirat Refugee Camp, central Gaza Strip. The attack killed eight civilians and wounded another twenty, constituting yet another war crime that confirms the occupation’s deliberate targeting of civilians, even while they mourn and bury martyrs.
The identified victims include Bilal Hathat, Jamil Abu Dalal, Hammam Abu Breik, Saleh Al-Qatrawi, Ubaida Ali Seidam, Mohammed Hamdouna, and Nidal Maher Ahmed. The identity of the eighth victim is still being confirmed.
Targeting a civilian funeral constitutes an extremely dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of the rules of international humanitarian law. It confirms the occupation’s continued policy of genocide and mass killing, and its complete evasion of its obligations under the ceasefire agreement through ongoing daily violations. The occupation continues to disregard the principles of distinction, proportionality, and military necessity, as well as the protection owed to civilians and civilian objects.
ICSPR warns that this continuing bloody escalation portends further massacres and crimes, and demonstrates the absence of any willingness by the occupation to comply with international law or submit to the will of the international community.
ICSPR calls upon the international community, the United Nations, the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions, and the states guaranteeing the ceasefire agreement to take immediate and effective action to stop the Israeli aggression; compel the occupation to cease its ongoing violations; provide international protection for Palestinian civilians; ensure criminal accountability for occupation leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity; and adopt effective deterrent measures and sanctions to stop the massacres and end the policy of impunity.
