ICSPR Holds a Specialized Meeting on Juvenile Justice to Strengthen the Protection of Children’s Rights and Promote Reformative Justice

The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights held yesterday, Sunday, a specialized meeting titled “Juvenile Justice,” delivered by Judge Mohammed Farawna, with the participation of a number of researchers, legal professionals, those interested in legal affairs, and law students.

The meeting came as part of ICSPR’s efforts to enhance legal awareness and consolidate the concepts of specialized justice, particularly the juvenile justice system, which represents a fundamental pillar for protecting children’s rights and ensuring their treatment in accordance with national and international human rights standards.

During the meeting, Judge Farawna discussed the legal framework regulating juvenile justice and the key principles governing the treatment of children. He highlighted the reformative philosophy upon which juvenile justice is based, focusing on rehabilitation and social reintegration rather than traditional punishment. He also reviewed the most prominent practical challenges facing the judiciary in Gaza and the implementation of juvenile legislation, stressing the importance of developing supportive policies and programs to safeguard children and their rights.

The meeting featured interactive discussions among participants, with many questions raised regarding mechanisms to strengthen fair trial guarantees for juveniles and the role of official and civil institutions in supporting the legal protection system for children amid the genocide and the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

For her part, human rights researcher and ICSPR activities coordinator Alaa Dawoud emphasized that the meeting came within a series of events implemented by ICSPR aimed at building the capacities of youth and legal professionals and promoting a culture of the rule of law, especially in issues with social and humanitarian dimensions.

ICSPR renewed its commitment to continuing its efforts to organize specialized meetings and training programs that contribute to developing legal knowledge, empowering youth with tools for analysis and human rights advocacy, strengthening civil peace, and protecting human rights.
