ICSPR: Targeting Al-Maamadani Hospital Is a Compound Crime Against Humanity and History That Requires Immediate Accountability

The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights (ICSPR) strongly condemns and denounces in the harshest terms the Israeli warplanes’ bombing of Al-Maamadani Hospital, which led to the destruction of the emergency and reception buildings and the oxygen station, and forced medical teams, patients, and the wounded to evacuate the hospital within 18 minutes, rendering it completely out of service.

ICSPR stresses the importance of recalling that the Al-Ahli Al-Maamadani Hospital is one of the first hospitals established in Gaza City by the Baptist Missionary Church in England in 1882. It is currently managed by the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem, making its targeting a compound crime — both through the destruction of the health sector and the deepening of the ongoing genocide. This act poses a direct threat to the lives of the wounded and sick due to the interruption of vital health services, especially hospital operations. It also constitutes an attack on one of the oldest historical and medical facilities that has long provided healthcare to the residents of northern Gaza and Gaza City, amid the destruction and shutdown of 35 hospitals in the area.

ICSPR warns of the ongoing and disgraceful international failure to stop the targeting of the health sector and the destruction of hospitals, which is deepening the humanitarian crisis and aims to annihilate, displace, and depopulate Gaza by turning it into an uninhabitable disaster zone devoid of essential humanitarian and healthcare services. This reflects the occupation’s contempt for Palestinians’ right to life and health and its blatant disregard for all rules of international humanitarian law, which grant special protection to hospitals, medical personnel, and humanitarian workers.

ICSPR calls on the international community, the United Nations, and Third World countries to take urgent action to stop the crime of genocide, ensure the continuous flow of humanitarian aid, medicine, medical equipment and supplies, doctors, and field hospitals, and to guarantee the evacuation of the wounded and sick to hospitals outside the Palestinian territories. ICSPR further demands the imposition of sanctions on the Israeli occupying power and the prosecution of those responsible for the crimes committed against the hospital, while ensuring international protection for civilians, the health sector, and its workers.
