ICSPR Condemns Threats and Incitement Against Dr. Mustafa Barghouti and Calls for an Immediate Investigation
The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights (ICSPR) strongly condemns and denounces the serious threats, false, repeated, and organized incitement and defamation campaign targeting Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative. The latest incident involved a statement falsely signed by Fatah Al-Asifa, which the movement denied yesterday, January 4, 2025. The statement contains allegations aimed at continuing the process of moral assassination against him, in addition to a series of serious threats, including endangering his life.
ICSPR expresses its concern and fear regarding the escalation of intimidation and electronic defamation campaigns targeting public figures, aimed at restricting public freedoms in violation of the law. These campaigns seek to instill fear and panic, restrict freedom of expression on public issues, and negatively impact national relations, posing significant risks to Palestinian society and its future.
ICSPR expresses its solidarity with Dr. Mustafa, a national and societal figure who enjoys the respect and appreciation of the Palestinian people for his prominent role in exposing the genocide crimes committed against Gaza and the crimes of the Israeli occupation. He also plays a crucial role in supporting national unity, civil peace, international solidarity, and various community and humanitarian activities, while consistently opposing and criticizing internal human rights violations.
ICSPR calls on the Palestinian National Authority, security agencies, and the Public Prosecution to conduct a serious investigation into this matter to identify those responsible for the fabricated and dangerous statement, along with all the threats and crimes targeting Dr. Mustafa Barghouti. This includes crimes of slander, defamation, and libel. ICSPR demands that the perpetrators of these crimes be held accountable to protect the rule of law, prevent the recurrence of such incidents, and halt defamation campaigns against public figures. This is essential to ensure public freedoms, civil peace, and personal safety, and to prevent the escalation of internal conflicts, which only serve the interests of the Israeli occupation and divert attention from its crimes.
