“Um Nael Al-Kahlout” Summarizes the Suffering of the Displaced and Those Whose Homes Were Demolished in Northern Gaza
As part of its human rights and humanitarian role, the International Commission to Support Palestinian People’s Rights (Hashd), continues to monitor the humanitarian situation and document Israeli occupation crimes. Hashd’s researcher met with Um Nael Al-Kahlout, one of the survivors of the ongoing genocidal crimes, now entering their eleventh month.
Sitting amidst the rubble of her destroyed home in Beit Lahia, Northern Gaza, Um Nael Al-Kahlout, who lost her son, her home, and the family’s sole source of income, tearfully recounts her family’s painful journey of displacement. Forced to move from one place to another due to bombings, fire belts, and artillery shells, the family has been fragmented, with some fleeing north and others to the south.
Um Nael and her family have been severely affected by the displacement, suffering from numerous illnesses due to overcrowding and harsh conditions in the displacement center. Faced with these unbearable hardships, they decided to return to the ruins of their home, setting up a makeshift tent with their few remaining belongings, in an attempt to reclaim a small part of their shattered life.
The “Al-Kahlout” tent is made of worn-out metal sheets and torn pieces of fabric, offering no protection from the summer heat or the winter cold, and failing to shield them from the rodents and stray animals that roam the area.
Her husband, Abu Nael, in his sixties, says that humanitarian aid reaches the family sporadically and inadequately, failing to meet even their basic needs, especially for families whose homes have been completely destroyed.
Abu Nael appeals to the entire world—its institutions and governments—to end the suffering of the Palestinian people, who have endured this genocidal war for over ten months.
The Al-Kahlout family, like hundreds of thousands of other Palestinian families who have lost their homes or loved ones due to this devastating war, calls on the international community to work towards ending the aggression, ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza’s residents, holding Israeli officials accountable for their crimes, and providing international protection for Palestinians.
